The mainstream two-door coupe is nearly extinct. Once a staple from brands like Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, and even Honda, front-wheel-drive coupes built on sedan platforms have all but vanished victims of SUV dominance and shifting buyer priorities. But just as the world turned away, Honda doubled down.
After more than a year of teasers and prototypes, the sixth-generation Honda Prelude has officially debuted in production form a bold revival of a nameplate that once defined sporty affordability. And in doing so, Honda isn’t just bringing back a car. It’s attempting to resurrect an entire segment.
Gone are the days when the Prelude was a rebodied Accord coupe. This new generation takes its foundation from the Honda Civic, but not just any Civic it’s based on the Civic Hybrid, sharing:

But Honda didn’t stop at borrowing parts. It added enthusiast-focused upgrades to transform this Civic into something special.
To combat torque steer and sharpen handling, the Prelude inherits the dual-axis strut front suspension from the Civic Type R a significant upgrade over the standard Civic.
Inside, the difference is most felt in the seats: plush, leather-trimmed sport buckets with a perforated houndstooth fabric pattern inspired by the classic Honda City. They’re supportive, stylish, and among the best in the class a true nod to Honda’s performance heritage.
While the rest of the cabin feels familiar (more on that later), these seats alone elevate the driving experience.

Inside, however, the familiarity hits hard. From the dash layout to the 9.0-inch touchscreen, it’s unmistakably Civic albeit with higher-end materials. The good news? It includes:

- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Full suite of Honda Sensing safety tech (adaptive cruise, lane centering)
- Bose premium audio system
All standard. No trim levels just one well-equipped model.
Honda markets the Prelude as a “2+2” grand tourer, and that’s accurate though the “+2” is generous.
Rear legroom is decent at 32.0 inches, but headroom is tight. Even at 5’6”, I found my head pressed against the C-pillar glass making long trips back there uncomfortable for adults.
But fold the rear seats down, and the liftback opens into a surprisingly usable space perfect for weekend getaways or road trips for two.

Honda hasn’t revealed pricing yet, but expects the Prelude to arrive at U.S. dealerships in late fall 2025.
Given its hybrid powertrain, Civic underpinnings, and niche positioning, expect a price above the Civic Hybrid, likely starting in the low-to-mid $30,000s.
But here’s the challenge: Why choose a two-door when you can get four doors and more space for less?
If you want sportiness, many will still lean toward rear-wheel-drive coupes like the Toyota GR86 or Ford Mustang. If you need practicality, the Civic Sedan or Hatchback makes more sense.
Yet, for those who want a blend of sporty style, hybrid efficiency, Honda reliability, and driver engagement, the Prelude fills a gap no other car does.
