New Alpine A390 Electric SUV: A Radical Evolution for the Iconic Brand |
Alpine is on a roll. Fueled by the success of its first electric model the A290 hot hatchback the French performance brand posted record sales in 2024 for the fourth year in a row. Now, it’s boldly expanding its lineup with the A390, a high-performance electric crossover that marks a dramatic departure from its sports car roots.
But don’t call it an SUV. Alpine insists it’s a “sport fastback” marketing speak for a sleek, coupe-styled electric vehicle with elevated ground clearance. Whatever you call it, the A390 is Alpine’s most ambitious project yet, blending aggressive design, cutting-edge tech, and thrilling performance on the AmpR Medium platform shared with the Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, and Nissan Ariya.
Despite the shared underpinnings, Alpine promises the A390 will be the sportiest and most engaging EV on this architecture and it backs that claim with serious power.

The production A390 evolved from the A390_β concept unveiled in October, now shedding its beta tag for full-scale production. While it shares its bones with Renault and Nissan siblings, the A390 stands out with a far more aggressive aesthetic.
Like the Megane E-Tech, it features rear door handles integrated into the C-pillars, creating a seamless, coupe-like profile. Standard 20-inch wheels give it presence, while optional 21-inch alloys add even more drama though they come at the cost of range.
Michelin developed bespoke summer and all-season tires specifically for the A390, ensuring grip matches its performance ambitions.

Alpine didn’t just stretch a hatchback it reimagined it. The front end features triangular air intakes housing 12 LEDs per side, while slim, futuristic headlights carry over the concept’s bold look. At the rear, a thin light bar is split by an illuminated Alpine logo, with triangular motifs echoed in the bumper.
Large front air intakes and a subtle rear spoiler enhance aerodynamics and visual aggression. A central ridge on the hood channels airflow under the car, improving stability. And proudly displayed on the C-pillars the French tricolor flag, a nod to its Dieppe, France production at Alpine’s historic plant.

Inside, the A390 shares its dashboard layout with Renault’s EVs: a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 12-inch vertical infotainment screen running Android Automotive. But Alpine adds its own flair retaining physical buttons below the display for intuitive control.
Higher trims get ergonomic, massaging front seats with heating and memory settings, a 13-speaker audio system, and a 360-degree camera. A dedicated smartphone app mirrors the car’s telemetry system, letting drivers track performance stats on the go.

Both the A390 GT and A390 GTS feature a tri-motor setup: one up front, two on the rear axle for precise torque vectoring.
- A390 GT: 396 hp, 480 lb-ft (650 Nm) – 0–62 mph in 4.8 seconds, top speed 124 mph (200 km/h)
- A390 GTS: 463 hp, 596 lb-ft (808 Nm) – 0–62 mph in just 3.9 seconds, top speed 137 mph (220 km/h)
That makes the GTS faster than the Nissan Ariya Nismo, cementing its place as the most powerful vehicle on the AmpR platform.
All A390 models come with an 89-kWh lithium-ion battery, but range varies by wheel size:
- 345 miles (555 km) WLTP with 20-inch wheels
- 323 miles (520 km) with 21-inch alloys
It supports DC fast charging at up to 190 kW, enabling a 15% to 80% charge in just 25 minutes. Alpine claims 20 minutes of charging adds enough range for two hours of highway driving.
Unlike Renault’s EVs, the A390 uses a custom battery pack engineered by French firm Verkor, featuring new cell chemistry and module design to sustain high charging speeds longer. It also includes a heat pump for efficiency and supports bidirectional charging at 22 kW ideal for powering homes or other devices.

At 181.7 inches long, 74.2 inches wide, and 60.3 inches tall, with a 106.6-inch wheelbase, the A390 is the largest Alpine ever built. It’s also the heaviest, starting at 4,676 lbs (2,121 kg) nearly double the weight of the lightweight A110 R.
But that mass brings practicality: 18.7 cubic feet (532 liters) of cargo space with rear seats up the most of any Alpine to date. Weight distribution is a near-perfect 49:51 front-to-rear, ensuring balanced handling despite the heft.
The Alpine A390 will launch in 2026, but won’t be available in the U.S. or Canada. Alpine plans to enter the North American market later this decade, likely with larger models. Fans of the brand’s mid-engine heritage can hold out hope the electric A110 successor is expected, possibly with a 2+2 “A310” revival to expand practicality.
