For those craving extra ruggedness from the all-new Subaru Outback, the Wilderness trim offers an even more trail-toughened package. Making its debut alongside the rest of the seventh-generation Outback lineup at the 2025 New York Auto Show, this latest iteration sticks closely to the established Wilderness blueprint just with a few meaningful enhancements.
Subaru has boosted the vehicle’s off-road readiness by increasing ground clearance to 9.5 inches, up from 8.7 inches on the standard model. While the automaker hasn’t specified exactly how that added height is achieved, they have reinforced underbody protection for improved durability in rough terrain. The redesigned front and rear bumpers also contribute to enhanced approach (20°), departure (22.5°), and breakover (21.2°) angles.

Beyond the mechanical upgrades, the suspension system has been specially calibrated for the Wilderness variant. Engineers integrated acceleration sensors at key points to give the electronically controlled dampers a better understanding of the vehicle’s movements whether cruising on the highway or navigating rocky trails. This setup improves stability across various driving conditions, especially when venturing off the beaten path. It works in tandem with an upgraded X-MODE system and Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires mounted on unique 17-inch wheels.
Aesthetically, the Wilderness trim stands out with bold styling cues. A prominent Subaru badge graces the grille, complemented by copper accents scattered throughout the exterior from the fog lights to taillight elements and roof rails. Badges identifying the Wilderness model are placed on the rear gate, C-pillars, and even embroidered into the headrests inside the cabin.

Inside, the seats come wrapped in water-resistant synthetic leather as standard, though buyers can opt for premium Nappa leather for added luxury. Under the hood, the 2026 Outback Wilderness continues with the turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER engine, delivering 260 horsepower and now 277 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) offering a simulated eight-speed manual mode for drivers who prefer more control.
Subaru has yet to reveal pricing details for the 2026 Outback Wilderness, but expect that information to drop closer to its scheduled launch in early 2026.
