Fresh off rebadging the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as the Rogue Plug-In Hybrid, Nissan is at it again but this time, it’s doing it right.

Meet the new Nissan Navara: a fourth-generation mid-size pickup that shares its DNA with the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton, yet has been thoroughly re-engineered to stand on its own especially in one of the toughest truck markets in the world: Australia.

Yes, it’s platform-sharing. But no, it’s not just badge engineering.

While the Navara and Triton share a foundation, Nissan didn’t simply swap logos and call it a day.

The automaker partnered with Premcar, an Australian engineering specialist, to extensively tune the Navara for real-world conditions across the continent from dusty outback tracks to urban hauling and heavy towing.

Suspension was reworked. Ride quality refined. Durability tested under extreme payloads and off-road abuse.

This isn't copy-paste. It’s localized performance tuning ensuring the Navara doesn’t just look different, but drives like a true Nissan.

Look closely, and you’ll see the Triton connection but Nissan has given the Navara a more rugged identity.

Key design cues include:

  • A bold new front end with a three-slot grille motif, paying homage to the legendary D21 Navara
  • Distinctive "C"-shaped LED lighting front and rear
  • Aggressive bumper design and fender sculpting

While much of the sheet metal remains shared, these changes give the Navara a tougher, more premium presence many say it even outstyles the Triton.

And when you're looking at the PRO-4X or upcoming Warrior concept, that edge becomes undeniable.

Nissan unveiled a concept version of the Navara Warrior, developed by Premcar, built on the PRO-4X but dialed up for serious adventure.

Features include:

  • Lifted suspension for increased ground clearance
  • Custom 17-inch wheels wrapped in massive 32-inch tires
  • Reinforced fenders and underbody protection
  • Additional driving lamps for night navigation
  • Lava red accent trim and prominent “Warrior” badging inside and out

Though still a concept, it signals Nissan’s intent: build a true off-road warrior for the hardcore buyer.

For now, every Navara in Australia and New Zealand comes with a single powertrain:

  • 2.4L turbocharged diesel engine
  • 201 horsepower
  • 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque
  • Paired to a six-speed automatic transmission

It may not be the most powerful in class, but it’s proven, reliable, and tuned for longevity.

All models feature electric power steering unlike some rivals (like the Hilux in certain markets), which retain hydraulic systems for simplicity.

Lower trims use Easy 4WD, which automatically engages all-wheel drive when traction is lost.

But step up to the ST-X and PRO-4X, and you get Super 4WD with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential a major upgrade for off-pavement grip.

Drivers can also choose from seven terrain modes:

  • Normal
  • Eco
  • Gravel
  • Snow
  • Mud
  • Sand
  • Rock

Whether crawling over boulders or blasting through dunes, the Navara adapts.

Payload varies by configuration:

  • 950–1,047 kg (2,094–2,308 lbs)

The flagship model comes equipped with a 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) tow rating, making it capable of handling car trailers, boats, and horse floats with ease.

Currently, Nissan is only offering the double-cab body style the most popular format for families and tradespeople alike.

Step inside, and yes it’s clearly based on the Triton. The only giveaway? A faint ghost of a Mitsubishi logo beneath the Nissan emblem on the steering wheel.

Still, Nissan keeps what works:

  • 9-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • 7-inch digital instrument cluster flanked by analog gauges
  • Abundance of physical buttons for climate, audio, and 4x4 controls

No hunting through touch menus. Just intuitive access essential when you’re bouncing down a dirt track.

Don’t mistake this for an old-school work truck.

The Navara brings a full suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS):

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic headlights and wipers
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Blind-spot monitoring with lane change assist
  • Emergency lane keeping assist
  • Unintended Acceleration Mitigation cuts power if the system detects you’ve hit the wrong pedal

It’s tech designed not just for comfort but for safety in high-risk environments.
