Fifteen years after launching the Nissan Leaf the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle Nissan is reinventing its EV pioneer for a new generation. When the original Leaf debuted in 2010, it offered just 73 miles of range and symbolized the dawn of affordable electrification. Now, for 2026, Nissan is giving the Leaf a complete overhaul, transforming it from a compact hatchback into a modern compact crossover with up to 303 miles of range, faster charging, and tech-forward features.

After months of teasers, Nissan has finally revealed full details and the new Leaf is more capable than ever.

The 2026 Leaf will be available in four trims:

  • S
  • S+
  • SV+
  • Platinum+

The S+, SV+, and Platinum+ models feature a 214-horsepower electric motor producing 261 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 75-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. This setup delivers impressive performance and efficiency for daily driving and weekend adventures.

The base S trim uses a smaller 52-kWh battery and a 174-hp motor with 254 lb-ft of torque. However, Nissan confirms this version won’t arrive until spring 2026 while the rest of the lineup hits dealerships this fall.

Range has seen a dramatic boost across the board:

  • Leaf S+: Up to 303 miles (up from 212 in the 2024 model)
  • SV+: 288 miles
  • Platinum+: 259 miles (due to larger 19-inch wheels; 18-inch are standard on lower trims)

Nissan hasn’t yet confirmed the range for the entry-level S trim, but expects to share that closer to its 2026 launch.

The new Leaf is future-ready with two charging ports:

  • NACS (Tesla-compatible) on the passenger side
  • J1772 on the driver’s side

It supports DC fast charging, going from 10% to 80% in just 35 minutes a major improvement for road trips and urban charging.

A heat pump comes standard on the SV+ and Platinum+ trims, improving cold-weather efficiency. An optional battery heater is also available to further enhance charging speed in winter.

Inside, the 2026 Leaf leverages its EV architecture with a flat floor and open cabin layout. All models get:

  • Dual 12.3-inch displays (digital cluster and infotainment) on S and S+
  • Upgraded 14.3-inch screens with Google Built-In on SV+ and Platinum+

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board.

Top-tier Platinum+ buyers get:

  • 10-speaker Bose audio system
  • Head-up display
  • ProPILOT Assist 2.0 with enhanced lane centering and adaptive cruise
  • ProPILOT Assist is standard on all trims, along with a full suite of safety tech:
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • High beam assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring

Nissan says the 2026 Leaf will start in the low-$30,000 range a slight increase over the 2025 model’s $29,290 starting price (including destination). But with the new Leaf now a larger, more capable crossover, the bump is expected.

However, a major challenge looms: production location. The new Leaf will be built at Nissan’s Tochigi plant in Japan, making it subject to the 25% U.S. import tariff on foreign-built EVs. That could add thousands to the price, threatening Nissan’s goal of offering a truly affordable electric vehicle in America.

The 2026 Nissan Leaf isn’t just an update it’s a reinvention. With longer range, faster charging, modern tech, and crossover practicality, it’s better positioned than ever to compete in today’s EV market. But whether it can stay affordable under the weight of import tariffs remains the biggest question of all.
