For over a decade, Nissan has offered a Nismo-tuned version of the Patrol in the Middle East a high-performance take on its flagship SUV. Now, for the first time, the U.S. is getting its own version: the 2026 Armada Nismo. It’s a bold move for a full-size SUV segment not exactly known for performance variants and while it answers a question few were asking, it’s still a welcome addition to Nissan’s performance lineup.

That said, American buyers might feel a bit shortchanged: they’re getting less power than their Middle Eastern counterparts.

The U.S.-spec Armada Nismo is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5L V-6, now tuned to deliver 460 horsepower 35 more than the standard Armada. Torque remains at 516 lb-ft (700 Nm).

But in the Middle East, where the same vehicle is sold as the Patrol Nismo, the engine known as the VR35DDTT produces 495 horsepower, thanks to region-specific tuning. Nissan claims the upgrade came from “extensive customer insights and feedback” though it’s safe to assume U.S. enthusiasts would’ve appreciated that extra 35 hp too.

Despite the difference, both models share the same robust platform, full-time four-wheel drive, and nine-speed automatic transmission.

Beyond power, there are minor design variations between the two:

  • The Middle East Patrol Nismo retains a front fog lamp, a design nod to the previous generation, with Nissan citing Formula E-inspired styling
  • The U.S. Armada Nismo replaces it with a cleaner rear diffuser and a more modern front bumper

Otherwise, the two are nearly identical featuring aggressive body kits, exclusive 22-inch wheels, red-accented Nismo styling, and track-inspired interior touches like quilted red-and-black leather seats. Badging is the most obvious giveaway: Armada in the U.S., Patrol elsewhere.

The Armada Nismo isn’t the only SUV in Nissan’s performance lineup. The brand has already launched the Ariya Nismo, its first electric Nismo model, signaling a shift toward electrified performance.

There was also a Juke Nismo in the past proving Nissan isn’t afraid to badge even compact crossovers with its performance moniker.

But true enthusiasts are still waiting for the GT-R Nismo and possibly a GT-R successor. The Hyper Force concept hints at an all-electric future for Godzilla, though a return seems unlikely in the near term.

For now, the Z Nismo stands as Nissan’s only traditional sports car with Nismo treatment though its high price and lack of a manual transmission have left many fans disappointed.

The 2026 Nissan Armada Nismo may not be a sales juggernaut in the making, but it’s a statement: Nissan still believes in performance, even in unexpected places.

Still, knowing that a more powerful 495-hp version exists and isn’t coming to America adds a bittersweet note for U.S. fans.

Enthusiasts may not be lining up to buy a high-performance full-size SUV but they’d definitely line up for the one they aren’t getting.
