As with the Nissan Z, it looks like we've seen the Nismo version for decades. It sure hasn't been long, but the wait is over. Say hello to the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo, now with more power, air conditioning and a grip for a graphic twist.

Let's talk about this power first. The source is still the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, but Nissan engineers followed the tried and tested method of adding more power, tweaking the cooling system and adding sound to find 20 horsepower and 34 lb-ft. torque exceeds the standard Z. Specifically, the output stands at 420 hp and 384 lb-ft, and the maximum number is from 2,000 rpm to 5,200 rpm for a large power line.

The power is put through a Nismo-specific nine-speed automatic transmission, and it's the only gearbox offered (sorry manual fans.) It all goes rear-wheel-drive, and -reverse Rays-specific lightweight 19-inch wheels with Nismo shod and Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600. These tires are similar to the rubber used on the GT-R, except here they are 285/35 in the rear. Another power is nothing if you can't use it. The tires help, but Nissan introduces a number of structural changes that seem subtle at first glance but make it look good and down.

The biggest change is in the front fascia, using a design that Nissan calls Grand-Nose or G-Nose for short. More than just a redesign to get rid of the Z rectangular grille, it goes straight ahead, in a similar style to the old Fairlady 240ZG. As a result, the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo is about eight inches longer than the standard model.

A prominent lip spoiler sits on the front fascia, with what Nissan says is the finest mesh ever used to cover a grille opening. The corners of the fairing have canards that are stylish and functional, adding strength while blending into the Nismo side. At the rear, the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo benefits from a large three-part rear spoiler that is wider and higher. By using the rocker bars mentioned in the GT-R inspired work, power is increased while reducing lift and drag. For now, we'll take Nissan's word for it because there are no performance stats to track these changes. Suspension and brake upgrades also make a difference. Nissan installs a special stabilizer bar, rebuilt shock absorbers and stiffer springs.

The chassis is strengthened to better handle the forces of aggressive racing tracks, with a focus on ground support and a plethora of grass and suspension and steering systems. Nissan says these upgrades make the 2024 Z Nismo 2.5 percent stiffer, but they also increase steering. Braking is improved by 15-inch discs at the front and 13.8-inch discs at the rear.

To make these upgrades easier to manage, Nissan is adding a new Sport+ mode designed to help drivers get the best time on the track. The Gear shift program is changed, among other things, and the Recaro seats help keep the driver and passenger in place. When it's not on track, Nismo-specific digital displays and a plethora of red accents give the interior a sporty feel.

On the exterior, the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo is available in five colors: Passion Red TriCoat, Brilliant Silver, Black Diamond Pearl, Everest White Pearl TriCoat and Stealth Gray - a Nismo-only tint. Pricing for the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo will be announced closer to its on-sale date, which is currently set for fall.
