For much of its history, Jeep was synonymous with four-wheel drive and rugged off-road capability. The idea of a front-wheel-drive Jeep was once unthinkable but that changed in 2006 with the introduction of the Patriot and original Compass, both of which offered front-wheel-drive configurations in base trims. Since then, Jeep has expanded its lineup with more FWD and AWD models, including the Renegade (2013), the Commander/Meridian (2022), and the Avenger (2023) though many of these models remain unavailable in the U.S. market.
The Jeep Avenger, for example, is offered only with front-wheel drive in its electric variant, while the gasoline-powered version includes all-wheel drive. However, the new 2025 Jeep Compass flips this formula entirely.

Jeep confirmed that the gasoline-powered Compass will now be available exclusively with front-wheel drive. If buyers want all-wheel drive, they must opt for the electric version of the Compass marking a notable shift in Jeep’s approach to performance and drivetrain offerings.
The electric Compass AWD variant features a dual-motor setup producing a combined 375 horsepower, making it the most powerful version in the lineup. Lower-spec electric models remain front-wheel drive, with outputs of 210 hp and 230 hp, respectively.

Jeep emphasized that the rear motor in the AWD-equipped EV is unique to the Compass, despite the model being built on the STLA Medium platform, shared with the Peugeot 3008, 5008, and Opel Grandland. The rear motor provides 66 hp and an impressive 171 lb-ft (232 Nm) of instant torque, allowing the Compass EV to tackle a 20% incline even with no traction at the front axle.
The new electric Compass is equipped with a 96-kWh battery pack, delivering an estimated 373 miles (600 km) of range. It supports DC fast charging at up to 160 kW, enabling a 20–80% charge in just 30 minutes, making it competitive with other electric SUVs in its class.

The Compass is not the only Jeep model embracing this AWD-only EV strategy. In the U.S., the Jeep Wagoneer S is available solely as an electric all-wheel-drive model, and the upcoming Jeep Recon will follow a similar path.
However, Jeep has paused development of a new Compass for the North American market, leaving its future uncertain. This suggests the brand is shifting focus toward next-generation electric models tailored for the U.S. market.
