This car feels out of place in 2025 America. Wagons have been largely out of favor here since the 1970s, and with the 25-percent tariff on German imports starting in April, it’s a tough sell. That said, Mercedes is pushing ahead with their hot E-Class hybrid for the U.S. market, and we have to hand it to AMG for making it happen.

And what a creation it is. Meet the 2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid Wagon, nearly identical to the European model from over a year ago. For a quick refresher, it packs 577 horsepower in normal driving, jumping to 604 hp when Race Start mode is engaged. These numbers align with the E53 sedan, which shares the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Sandwiched in between is an electric motor, delivering an additional 161 horsepower. All that power is routed through the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

With everything tuned for peak performance, the E53 Hybrid Wagon can hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, but only when Race Start is engaged available with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package. This package also raises the wagon's top speed from an electronically capped 155 mph to 174 mph, adds an AMG limited-slip rear differential, 15.4-inch front composite brakes, active engine mounts, and a slick AMG steering wheel.

Of course, it's not all about performance. As a plug-in hybrid, it features a 28.6-kWh (21.2-kWh usable) battery mounted at the rear, allowing it to travel at speeds of up to 87 mph without the gas engine. While Mercedes hasn't shared the exact electric-only range, it's likely to be around 40 miles, similar to the E53 Hybrid sedan, which can go 42 miles on electric power. Given the added weight of the wagon, the range will likely be a bit shorter.

When it hits the U.S., the E53 Hybrid Wagon will be available in 12 exterior colors, with a range of packages to personalize the long-roof E-Class. AMG fans can opt for the special E53 Hybrid Edition 1 trim, featuring Alpine Gray paint, bold AMG graphics, and 21-inch wheels. Inside, the Edition 1 boasts a gray interior with yellow accents and exclusive branding, along with a full suite of options from Mercedes.

This wagon marks AMG's return to the high-performance wagon market in the U.S., following the departure of the E63 with its 603-hp twin-turbo V-8 after 2023. Technically, this new hybrid is more powerful by a single horsepower, but it's about half a second slower to 60 mph than the E63. While Mercedes hasn't provided specific details on weight, that hybrid powertrain likely adds significant mass, explaining the slower acceleration.

The price is still a mystery, but it’s unlikely the new hybrid wagon will carry the same hefty price tag as the outgoing E63, which started over $122,000. The E53 Hybrid sedan begins at $89,150, so the wagon could potentially come in under $100,000. We’ll find out later this year when the 2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid Wagon officially hits the market.
