When Mini introduced the new Cooper 3-door Hardtop last year, it only featured the E and SE electric models. Only now the sedan gets an internal combustion engine. No diesel, but BMW's smallest car has a pair of petrol engines.

The base model is called the Cooper C and comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine good for 154 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque (230 Newton-meters). This gives it a 0-62 mph time of 7.7 seconds. Stepping up to the Cooper S and Mini rewards you with a large turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter, producing 201 hp and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm), reducing the sprint time to 6.6 seconds. Those who want more oomph will have to wait for the next JCW model, although Mini will sell you a new JCW hatchback at launch that has all the features but no extras.

Depending on the selected Mini, you have a choice between several 16 to 18-inch rims, four roof colors, and three gradient roof finishes for the preferred model if the Multitone Roof option is selected. The interior gets the same 9.4-inch infotainment OLED system as the electric version, and thanks to Mini has removed all the physical controls. 

There's a parking brake, gear selector, on/off button and volume key, all on the rocker bar below the circular display. You can store 7.4 cubic feet (210 liters) of luggage on the back of the seats in place, or 28.2 cubic feet (800 liters) when the seats are folded. Mini plans to launch the latest version of the Cooper, as well as a more practical five-door hatchback. This will be the last wave of ICE models before the BMW Group abandons gasoline powered vehicles at the end of the decade.

The new Mini Cooper C and Cooper S will be available in Oxford, unlike the electric Cooper E and SE. Both models are made in China by Spotlight Automotive – a joint venture between Mini's parent company BMW Group and Great Wall Motor. We won't see a UK-built electric sedan until 2026, with the Aceman small crossover coming. The equivalent five-door model is expected to arrive later this year.
