After days of teasers.

After years of rumors.

After over a decade without a true performance flagship

Subaru pulled back the curtain in Japan and what did we get?

Not a production WRX STI.

Again.

Instead, meet the WRX STI Sport# Prototype a stunning, red-accented, rally-ready-looking concept that looks exactly like the car Subaru fans have begged for but comes with no promise of production.

Yes, it’s another prototype.

No, we’re not okay with this.

On the outside, this thing screams “I’m ready.”

Aggressive wide-body stance.

Large forged wheels.

Signature STI red accents.

Rally-inspired aerodynamics.

It has every visual cue of a full-blooded STI right down to the center-mounted exhaust and aggressive rear diffuser.

But under the hood?

The same 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine from the current WRX:

  • 271 horsepower
  • 258 lb-ft of torque

Which means unless something changes it’s not the power upgrade many hoped for.

However, there is one major win:

Just like the old days.

Subaru says the drivetrain is tuned for sharper response, though exact figures remain under wraps. But given the “prototype” label, don’t expect numbers just yet.

Developed by the revived STI (Subaru Tecnica International) division, the Sport# name hints at a new era part of a series of high-performance evolutions that may lead to something bigger.

"Coming Soon" reads the official site.

But how soon?

Will it be sold globally?

And will it finally earn the true STI badge?

All questions zero answers.
