At the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, Nissan sent a message loud and clear:
The spirit of Nismo performance isn’t dead it’s evolving.
Enter the Aura Nismo RS Concept a widebody, rear-spoilered, ground-hugging hot hatch that looks like it escaped from a Gran Turismo cover.
And yes it’s powered by an engine that doesn’t turn the wheels.
But before you roll your eyes at another EV-powered “performance” car hear us out.
This one’s different.
The Aura is essentially a premium version of the Nissan Note, Japan’s beloved subcompact hatchback in production since 2004.
Now in its third generation (launched in 2020), the model received a mid-cycle refresh in 2024 including updates to the existing Aura Nismo. So the Nismo badge isn’t new. But the RS treatment? This is next-level.
Visually, the Aura Nismo RS Concept means business. Nissan dropped the ride height by 0.8 inches (20 mm) and flared the fenders by a massive 5.7 inches (145 mm) giving it a muscular, track-ready profile.
Other standout changes:
- +5.6 inches (142 mm) longer than the standard Aura
- Aggressive front splitter, side skirts, and vented hood
- Massive fixed rear wing mounted high for maximum downforce
- Gloss black Nismo-branded 18-inch wheels
- Upgraded brakes for improved thermal resistance
It tips the scales at 3,285 lbs (1,490 kg) about 220 lbs heavier than the base model but what it gains in weight, it promises to return in grip and drama.

Here’s where things get interesting.
Like the regular Aura Nismo, the RS concept uses Nissan’s e-Power series hybrid system but tuned for more excitement.
Under the skin:
- 1.5L three-cylinder gasoline engine – acts solely as a generator (no mechanical link to wheels)
- Front electric motor: 201 hp, 243 lb-ft (330 Nm)
- Rear electric motor: 134 hp, 144 lb-ft (195 Nm)
- Combined output: 335 hp equivalent, with instant torque delivery
- Full electric all-wheel drive
Yes this is technically a hot hatch with no direct engine drive.
But also yes it delivers true dual-motor AWD performance, with precise power distribution between axles.
And here’s the kicker:
This entire drivetrain is borrowed from the much larger X-Trail/Rogue Nismo meaning Nissan is serious about performance, even in small packages.
Despite its sporty ambitions, the Aura Nismo RS keeps the standard model’s torsion-beam rear suspension not ideal for track precision, but lightweight and compact.

Still, with stiffer tuning, lowered springs, and wider track, it’s clearly aimed at spirited driving if not full-blown circuit racing.
Think of it as a modern-day GTI for the electrified age: front-heavy, FWD-biased in feel, but with AWD traction when needed.
Nissan hasn’t committed to mass production.
Instead, the company says it plans to upgrade and race the Aura Nismo RS before deciding whether to sell it.
Given that this generation of the Aura/Note is already five years old, this could serve as a swan song a final, fiery sendoff to the platform.
If it does go on sale, expect it to remain Japan-only, joining the ranks of other JDM gems like the Honda Fit RS and Toyota GR Yaris.
