It has been nearly ten years since Volvo phased out the XC70 to introduce the V60 Cross Country. Now, the iconic nameplate is preparing for a revival though not in the form many enthusiasts might expect. Rather than returning as a station wagon, the XC70 will re-emerge as an SUV, marking Volvo’s latest addition to its growing lineup of sport utility vehicles. The model is scheduled to launch in China later this year, with potential availability expanding to other global markets.

Positioned above the XC60, the new XC70 will offer a more spacious interior, catering to customers seeking additional room without stepping into larger vehicle segments. This move aligns with Volvo’s broader strategy to expand its SUV offerings under the Geely ownership umbrella.

Volvo has seen a steady rise in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales, with figures increasing by 11% through April, reaching a total of 56,722 units. Building on this momentum, the automaker is introducing its first “extended-range” PHEV variant with the XC70. The model promises an electric-only range of 124 miles (200 kilometers), according to China’s CLTC testing cycle a significant improvement over the XC60’s 36-mile range in the U.S. and 50-mile range under Europe’s WLTP standard. However, it’s important to note that these comparisons are not directly equivalent due to differences in testing methodologies.

While the CLTC figures tend to be more optimistic, real-world performance measured by EPA or WLTP standards is expected to be lower. Nonetheless, Volvo emphasizes that this marks a milestone as its longest-range PHEV to date. The extended range is made possible by the Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), which also supports fast charging capabilities. Specific technical details, however, remain undisclosed at this time.

The term “extended-range” could imply either a significantly larger battery than the XC60’s 18.8-kWh unit or point to a different type of powertrain configuration. Notably, Volvo’s parent company, Geely, has been developing a series hybrid system in collaboration with Renault through their joint venture, Horse. In this setup, an internal combustion engine functions solely as a generator to recharge the battery similar to systems seen in the Mazda MX-30 with rotary range extender or the upcoming Ram 1500 Ramcharger.

This innovative approach reportedly allows for up to 124 miles (200 km) of electric range using a battery pack smaller than what is typical for a full EV, with a total driving range estimated at approximately 500 miles (805 km).

Visually, the new XC70 adopts Volvo’s contemporary SUV design language. It is expected to be slightly longer than the 185.4-inch XC60. Distinctive features include matrix LED headlights positioned beneath the brand’s signature Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights, surrounding a closed-off grille. The presence of an AWD badge on the rear indicates that power will be distributed to all four wheels.

Volvo plans to officially unveil the reborn XC70 in the coming months, offering further details about its specifications, pricing, and market availability.
