Even after nearly a decade since its debut, the Volvo S90 is proving that it can age like fine wine. The Swedish automaker has announced a new round of updates for its flagship luxury sedan just months after revealing similar changes for the XC90 SUV. Despite a drop in sales by 18.4% to 40,210 units in 2024 , the S90 continues to perform well enough to justify another facelift, signaling Volvo’s intent to keep the model in production for several more years.
The exterior refresh closely follows the design upgrades introduced on the XC90 facelift last September. Expect a redesigned front fascia featuring a new grille and updated matrix LED headlights. Additional styling tweaks include a revised hood, front bumper, and reshaped fenders. At the rear, the taillights have been restyled for a fresher look. For 2026, Volvo is introducing two new paint finishes: Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red , along with fresh two-tone alloy wheel designs.

Inside the cabin, the S90 adopts the larger 11.2-inch infotainment display from the XC90. Due to its size, the screen now protrudes slightly from the dashboard rather than sitting flush, which may divide opinions including ours. On a positive note, the interior benefits from enhanced sound insulation and now comes standard with adaptive suspension , promising a smoother and quieter ride.
While full technical specifications are still under wraps, Volvo has confirmed that the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant offers up to 50 miles (80 km) of all-electric range under the WLTP testing cycle. In select markets, buyers will also be able to opt for a mild-hybrid gasoline engine with front-wheel drive. Notably, Volvo ceased production of diesel-powered models just over a year ago.

Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on whether the V90 wagon will receive the same updates. Sales of the V90 and V90 Cross Country totaled just 9,939 units in 2024 four times less than the S90 sedan. Some European markets, including the Netherlands, have already stopped offering the stylish estate variant.
Production of the refreshed S90 is set to begin this summer in China , where it will launch first. Other global markets may follow, but the United States and Europe won’t be getting the 2026 model . Since 2017, the S90 has been built exclusively in China, making it vulnerable to new U.S. tariffs under the Trump administration.

Erik Severinson, Volvo’s Chief Product and Strategy Officer, emphasized the car’s continued relevance in key regions: “The S90 remains an important part of our product lineup for the coming years, particularly in Asian markets.” Similarly, the XC90 will remain in production for the foreseeable future.
In short, while American and European buyers will miss out on the updated 2026 Volvo S90, customers in Asia and other selected regions can look forward to a refined, tech-packed luxury sedan that continues to impress despite its age.
