After nearly 20 years covering the auto industry, one truth remains constant: buying a new car too early means missing out. In today’s fast-evolving market, mid-cycle updates come faster than ever and the Dacia Spring is the perfect example.

Just one year after its major 2024 facelift, Dacia is already rolling out a significantly upgraded 2026 Spring EV transforming Europe’s most affordable electric car from a slow city runabout into a surprisingly capable urban commuter.

The biggest leap? Performance.

Previously criticized for sluggishness, the Spring now gets two much more powerful motor options:

  • Base model: Upgraded from 45 hp to 70 hp
  • Top trim: Jumps from 65 hp to 100 hp

But raw horsepower only tells part of the story. The real-world difference is staggering:

  • 50–75 mph (80–120 km/h) in just 10.3 seconds down from a glacial 26.2 seconds
  • High-output version cuts that time to 6.9 seconds (from 14)
  • Up to 20% more power and torque in the critical mid-range

Suddenly, merging onto highways, passing slower traffic, and keeping pace outside city limits no longer feels like a struggle.

To support the increased demands, Dacia swaps in a new Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery with 24.3 kWh capacity a first for Renault Group’s EV lineup.

LFP chemistry brings key benefits:

  • Longer lifespan and better durability
  • Improved safety and thermal stability
  • More consistent performance over time

It also enables faster DC charging:

  • 40 kW peak charging (up from 30 kW)
  • 20–80% charge in just 29 minutes

That’s a huge improvement for an entry-level EV making public charging far more practical.

Beyond power, Dacia has refined the driving experience:

  • First-ever anti-roll bar added for improved cornering stability
  • Retuned shock absorbers and springs for better ride quality
  • Upgraded brakes for safer stops
  • Aerodynamic body tweaks reduce drag coefficient from 0.745 to 0.660 (on 14-inch wheel models)

These changes make the Spring feel less bouncy, more planted, and more confident at higher speeds closing the gap between affordability and drivability.

Despite these upgrades, the Spring remains Europe’s cheapest EV a crucial entry point for buyers transitioning from internal combustion.

And while it’s getting better fast, it won’t be the long-term solution.

Soon, the China-built Spring will be replaced by a new Renault Twingo-based EV, previewed as a boxy, upright A-segment hatchback. Expected to launch in 2026, it’s projected to start around €18,000 slightly above the current Spring, but built on a modern European platform.

Until then, the 2026 Spring EV stands as proof that affordable doesn’t have to mean underpowered.

With 100 hp, 40 kW charging, LFP battery tech, and vastly improved dynamics, this little EV is finally ready to keep up not just with traffic, but with the times.
