When Mercedes-AMG unveiled the second-generation AMG GT, purists revolted. The new model grew into a heavier, grand-touring-focused 2+2 coupe more SL than sports car and shockingly, even offered a four-cylinder variant. For many, the soul of the original GT was lost. But it wasn’t dead. It was just waiting for its moment to strike back.
In 2025, that moment arrives with the GT2 Edition W16 a no-compromise, track-only monster resurrecting the spirit of the original C190 platform. This isn't a softened grand tourer. It’s a fire-breathing, rear-wheel-drive race car built exclusively for the circuit.
And yes it’s one of the most extreme customer race cars ever sold by AMG.
At its heart lies a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine, tuned to unleash 818 horsepower and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque all without hybrid assistance. That’s a massive leap over the standard GT2’s 707 hp, achieved through aggressive tuning and optimized airflow.
But the real fireworks come with the Push2Pass function activated via a button on the steering wheel. Press it, and the engine unleashes an additional 98 hp and 148 lb-ft (200 Nm) by spiking boost pressure, delivering short bursts of 916 hp for overtaking or qualifying laps. It’s raw. It’s loud. And it’s gloriously analog.

Power goes exclusively to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential racing transmission, mounted at the rear axle in a transaxle layout for optimal weight distribution.
Even better? The gearbox is connected to the engine via a carbon fiber torque tube boosting chassis rigidity and improving drivetrain response. It’s engineering excellence taken to the limit.
Despite its power, the GT2 Edition W16 is brutally light:
- Just 3,153 lbs (1,430 kg)
- Achieved through extensive use of carbon fiber, titanium, and ultra-light 18-inch magnesium wheels
Aerodynamics have been pushed to the edge:
- Full-body widebody kit
- Adjustable front splitter and rear wing
Drag Reduction System (DRS) driver-activated via button
- Closes fender louvers
- Flattens the rear wing
- Reduces drag to push top speed beyond 199 mph (320 km/h)
And yes DRS and Push2Pass can be used together, creating a terrifying burst of straight-line velocity.

The GT2 Edition W16 doesn’t come cheap. Mercedes-AMG is asking €679,000 before VAT roughly $791,000 USD at current exchange rates.
Production is limited to just 30 units worldwide, each hand-assembled with obsessive attention to detail. Ownership includes support from AMG’s motorsport division, making it as much a track experience as it is a purchase.
For those who want a taste of the new GT lineage on public roads, AMG will soon launch the GT Track Sport a street-legal homologation special based on the second-gen “C192” GT. Expected to preview the upcoming GT3 race car, it will bridge the gap between road and track.
